About me:

Hello, my name is Shaun Mills and I am the LLM Course Leader. I have been an academic lawyer for nearly 22 years and I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I have worked at UCLan for 21 years.

What I do:

As Course Leader my primary responsibility is to manage our LLM Programmes of which we have five: International Business Law with Commercial Arbitration; Financial and Commercial Law; Employment Law; International Criminal Justice and Security Law and the generic LLM in Law. My role as Course Leader involves many things including organising Induction events, discussing individual progress with students and sorting out any problems you may experience whilst on the Course. I work closely with other members of the LLM Team in checking your academic progress. I represent your interests at the Law School examination boards where decisions are made about your final degree classification. I chair the staff-student liaison panels, which meet twice a year and give students a ‘voice’ within the Law School to raise issues of concern or praise about their LLM courses. I also act as your personal tutor and can offer guidance on any life problems, which may interfere with your academic progress. I am also the module leader for Advanced Legal Systems and the LLM Dissertation modules (both compulsory modules on the LLM courses). Furthermore, I am module leader for one of the LLM optional modules, EU Business Law.

During your course, my role is to support you with the adjustment to postgraduate legal learning and assessment through close supervision, direction and advice. You will benefit greatly from the support of your whole course team; myself as your course leader and personal tutor, and your module tutors.

Why study on the LLM?

With more students graduating than ever before, a postgraduate degree is a great way to help you stand out from the crowd in an ever more competitive job market. It can extend your subject knowledge, add a different dimension to your skills or even allow you to change career direction. It may also help increase earning potential over the course of your career. This is now an excellent time to think about enrolling for one of our LLM Courses.

For each course you are required to take six modules plus the Dissertation (15,000 words). Advanced Legal Systems is a compulsory module block taught at the start of the course and seeks to introduce you to the interaction between legal systems at national, regional (EU) and international levels. All modules are taught via two-hour, student-centred, workshops and assessed by coursework in which you are given flexible choices to research.

We have two campus-based (day-time) LLM Courses:-

  • LLM in International Business Law with Commercial Arbitration: compulsory modules are WTO Law and Policy; International Commercial Litigation and International Commercial Arbitration. Optional modules include International Intellectual Property Law and EU Business Law or you could select one of the compulsory modules offered on the LLM in Financial and Commercial Law)

  • LLM in Financial and Commercial Law: compulsory modules are International Company and Commercial Law and Banking & Financial Services Regulation. For the optional modules, you can choose from the compulsory modules or optional modules offered on the LLM in International Business Law with Commercial Arbitration

We also have LLM’s that are taught entirely online (and in the evenings). These also have two-hour workshops that are designed to replicate the face-to-face classroom experience offered on our campus-based courses.

  • LLM in Employment Law: compulsory modules are Employment Law in Practice; Discrimination in Employment and Security in Employment. Optional modules include the Independent Research Project and Privacy & Confidentiality in Employment or you can choose from modules offered on our other LLM’s.

  • LLM in International Criminal Justice and Security Law: compulsory modules are International Criminal Law & Security; Maritime Law & Security and Transnational Regulation of Terrorism. Optional modules include Transnational Regulation of Human Trafficking and International Human Rights or you can choose from modules offered on our other LLM’s.

  • LLM in Law: apart from the Advanced Legal Systems module (which is compulsory for all LLM students) you have the flexibility to choose modules offered on any of other LLM course.

What our students say:

Marwa Narmiq (International Student: Jordan). July 2015 Graduate LLM in International Business Law

“Studying the LLM in international Business Law with the Lancashire Law School (UCLan) was one of the best decisions I have made, and I am glad I did not miss this opportunity. My experience at the University of Central Lancashire was amazing. The friendly and professional atmosphere provided by the tutors at the Lancashire Law School was brilliant, as we students were provided with constant guidance, direction and support especially during the time of dissertation writing when I was under pressure and panicking; I was able to seek constant guidance and support from my supervisor whenever needed. The library and the educational facilities provided for students are amazing. Not to forget the fact that the course was truly international, I studied with students from all corners of the world. The cohort is fairly small which meant that we all became good friends and we helped to keep each other motivated. It was also nice that we were connected not only with Preston campus students, but also with distance learning students and Mauritius Campus students. The course benefitted me in many different ways e.g. to learn how to work independently; communicate effectively (orally and in writing); research effectively and my critical thinking skills were certainly enhanced. The stimulating learning environment and the high quality learning experience has inspired me to stay on and study my PhD with the Lancashire Law School (UCLan). I definitely recommend studying the LLM, you won’t regret it!”
